i dislocated my shoulder the first time in high school 6 years ago playing basketball...and again a few months later and then had arthroscopic surgery to re-connect and strengthen the ligaments. It was doing great for a few years but I recently dislocated the shoulder again. So I stopped playing basketball and now im lifting dem weights. My shoulder feels akward on dips and shoulder exercises like dumbell shoulder press or pull ups with the wrist facing away from the body or cable crossovers. so i sacrifice form a little bit by favoring my strong shoulder for fear of dislocating again while im doing a dip, pull up, or pressing. ive been reading all these other posts about shoulder injuries. Anybody else dislocate their shoulder??? Should I just lift through the pain/akwardness???

O and ps the shoulder is fully healed now...its had an adequate 8 weeks to heal while i did therapy strengthening exercises. so the shoulder is as good as it will ever be untill i can afford surgery again

Maybe you need to do the rehab exercises again, and start slowly. Pushing through joint pain is never a good idea.

Offsetting your balance is only going to worsen and agitate the pre-existing issue. As Az said, don't try to "push through" anything. If an exercise hurts, try some isolation stuff that doesn't hurt to strengthen the area.
Dips hurt my shoulders if I lean forward while doing them (to try and hit the pecs a little). I'm limited to keeping it straight up and down to minimize the rotation angle on my left shoulder. Again, if an exercise hurts, you can also try the DB alternative. -------------------- ![]() |

ive never felt my shoulder grind inside. it just feels akward on dips and such other lifts...like it may pop out of place again. thanks for all the input...isolation exercises are probably the way to go in my situation.

How long has it been since you did your rehab exercises?

i haven't done my rehab exercises for three weeks...but i pulled out the thera-band today and did some rehab exercises before lifting. i think it helped. today was my chest and triceps workout so I did some dips and it felt pretty good. I changed my form slightly on the dips...i used to dip down far enough so that my arms ar parallel to the floor...now i stop just before they are parallel...and i still get a good burn on the triceps.

Do them after your workout. You need the stability those muscles provide, for when you lift.

ive dislocated my shoulder a few times now and have had two surgeries on my shoulder. my last being of the open procedure which took place only a month ago. if you have any questions regarding your shoulder just let me know. In my opinion though i would go get a MRI done, especally since you have already had surgery. you most likely tore everything back apart or at least loosened ligaments allowing your shoulder to slip back out, since it was already repaired. I would discontinue lifting right now, so you sont put any more added stress to your rotator cuff.

Yes, PT is a bitch. I've had to go through it for my back, ankle, and knee. And I'm only in my early 20s!! |
